Trip Reports / Re: Stanthorpe Weekend
« Last post by Hangman on October 14, 2020, 03:48:00 PM »
My Addition Stanthorpe October 2020

I was able to leave Redcliffe at 7pm and headed west to Maryvale. I had read a lot about the Crown Hotel at Maryvale and decided to camp there Friday night. It was a quiet night at the hotel with a few locals and the footie. There is a grassy patch at the back of the pub but 4 caravans were parked here. I rolled out my swag on the verge beside the road after a couple of beers.

Tom rolled into town at 7am and we headed to Warwick for brekkie. Unfortunately the bakery was not open so we continued on to Stanthorpe. After a brekkie roll we headed to Blue Topaz Caravan Park to meet up with the others who had been here since Friday. This is usually the busiest time of the year at the caravan park with the seasonal fruit pickers but it was very quiet at the moment with Covid and the drought. Stanthorpe was trucking water from Warwick at the moment.

The caravan park does not have good water so buys water any way. Showers cost 20 cents for 3 minutes. The shower block near our camp was very unpredictable. The first shower I had was good but the second was similar to the experience others had. Hot and cold flushes with no water pressure. The shower cubicle was only for smaller persons and the shower rose was low. The showers in the main block were much better.

Tom and I set up the bachelor pad with Andrew and Glenn joining us. There is large grassy areas with a few smaller trees scattered. There were heaps of large ants on the ground but none seemed to bite. Once we had set up Andew , Dom and Chantal and I headed to Girraween National Park for a walk. We had decided to do the Pyramid and Junction tracks then meet up with the others later to do an easy drive and collect some firewood.

We arrived at the overflow car park at 11am. It was very busy with school holidays and a long week end. We headed up the Pyramid first being the harder track. The track gradually climbs to the exposed rock top. You can follow the white dotted track or as Dom and I did climb straight up the rock. The climb is only 290m and it gives a birds eye view of the park. It is very dry at the moment and there is still scars from the bush fires earlier in the year. There is still some patches of wild flowers which break up the brown.

Girraween is a very unique landscape. With large granite boulder out crops scattered amongst the trees and large exposed granite areas with scattered large boulders. After the pyramid climb we walked out to the junction which is the junction between 2 creeks. There was some water in the creek just enough for Andrew to have a swim. We only dripped our feet in. From here we headed back to the car park to meet the other. We walked 9km which took us 3 hrs.

After meeting up with the others we headed back to Stanthorpe via Pyramids Rd. We stopped to collect some fire wood on the road side outside the national park. Thankfully David and Jill had found me some Grumpy Old Bastard Port so I was looking forward to a quiet night by the fire. Even though it was warm during the day once the sun was down it was quite cool. Tonight we were all going to the diner for a hamburger and milkshake. So it was back to camp for one of those shower experiences I mentioned earlier.

I do just want to conclude my Stanthorpe experience with a mention of Sundown National park which we did on Sunday. Rats Castle Track has eluded me the previous 2 trips and I was determined to get it done this trip. Success. It is a long day at Sundown with slow gibber tracks. The loop track is very challenging if approaching the track anti clockwise. The steep rocky climb is very rutted. We did it from the creek side which was more doable but still a very clean challenging track. Sundown did break a Patrol. Chris + Toni arriving back at camp on a tow truck but I will leave that for another time.
