Recovery Points vs Tie Down Points

I wanted to start this tread as some general information and guidance in relation to the topic of Recovery points vs Tie Downs.

This is a topic that always causes great debate and this is why I am going to say from the outset I am by no means an expert on this, I simply wish to share my experience in the industry with you and also encourage other to as well.
I am only going to cover the front of the vehicle here.

Tie Down Point

All vehicles are fitted with these from factory. They are designed to do what the name suggests – tie the vehicle down during transport or shipping. They should not be used for towing or recovery.

(Lower hole)

Tow Point

Some vehicles are fitted with factory tow points. These are generally made of a heavier material and attached to the chassis. These are designed to tow the car with however they are not suitable for recovery (Contrary to popular belief)

Rated Recovery Points

This is where the whole situation gets interesting. Many people believe that just because you purchase a rated recovery point and bolt it to your vehicle it is fine to recover off – this is not always the case. The point that you purchase maybe rated but that is the point on its own. Examples of these hooks include:

These hooks are all rated in their own right however consideration needs to be exercised when these are on the vehicle. Some will bolt up to factory holes and others require drilling.

Where they bolt to factory holes generally these points on the chassis are reinforced and will take the load better than other sections of the chassis.

If you have to drill the chassis always consider where the strongest point is.

Regardless of this I would always recommend fitting a hook to each chassis and using an equalisation strap (tree trunk protector) as I have seen far to many chassis bent and hooks pulled out by using one point alone.

To my knowledge there is only one company that makes an actual rated recovery point that is rated on the vehicle – ARB (This is not and ad for ARB – simply advice). They infact have reasonable article on their website well worth a read (once again not an ad)

This is only information based upon my experiences to try and provide some clarity for our members. I once again state that I am by no means and expert on this and I would recommend anyone fitting a recovery point consult a 4wd specialist or engineer prior to doing so.

Good job Kris,

Certainly interesting about the tow hook on the vehicle. Might get you out once, but could weaken that point and increase the risk next time.
You are right about the twisted chassis, too often people forget the forces involved in snatch recoveries.

We are looking into recovery points as all we have is tow points on our xtrail.
